Biography

Karl Fortess (1907–1993) was an American painter who studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League. His work, often identified as part of the Woodstock School, features depopulated Magic Realist scenes. Fortess' paintings are characterized by his use of oil on canvas, with notable works such as 'Low Pressure Area' (c. 1940s) signed with an artist signature lower left.
