Biography
John Charles Van Dyke (1856–1932) was an American art historian, educator, and librarian. He was the first professor of the history of art at Rutgers College (now Rutgers University). Born on April 21, 1856, in New Brunswick, NJ, to Judge John and Mary Dix (Strong) Van Dyke, he studied art abroad and later received a degree from Columbia.
As an art critic, scholar, and author, his work is notable for its historical significance.
