Edith Wharton (1862–1937) was an American painter and artist of the Gilded Age. Born into a society with strict social norms for women, she defied conventions by pursuing her artistic interests. At 16, Wharton secretly published her collection of poems, 'Verses', marking the beginning of her prolific writing career.
