John Neagle (1796–1865) was an American painter, primarily known for his portraits. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, he began to experiment with painting as an apprentice to Thomas Wilson, a 'coach and ornamental painter.' Neagle's career spanned several decades, during which he captured society figures, politicians, and everyday heroes in Philadelphia's 19th century.
His work is characterized by psychological insight and dazzling brushwork, as seen in his famous piece 'Pat Lyon at the Forge,' which bears his artist signature.
