Biography
Thomas Buchanan Read (1822–1872) was an American painter and poet. Born on March 12, 1822, in Corner Ketch, Pennsylvania, he received only an elementary education. After his father's sudden death, Read had a short-lived apprenticeship to a local tailor, which was reportedly abusive and cruel. By age 15, he worked under a grocer in Philadelphia.
As a painter, Read is known for historical scenes like 'The Harp of Erin' and evocative portraits. His self-portrait from around 1860 showcases his artistic signature.
