Arthur Armstrong

Arthur Armstrong (1798–1851) was an American painter who primarily worked in Pennsylvania. Born in Manor Township, he advertised himself as a teacher and painter from his shop in Marietta in 1820. His work spanned various genres, including portraits, landscapes, and historical paintings. Armstrong's artistic endeavors were significant during the early to mid-19th century, a period of dynamic growth and evolving identity in American art.

He was known for his naive style, which is evident in his oil on canvas portrait of the Lichtey family. The artist signature 'A. Armstrong Painter Lancaster City 1849' appears on this work.
